God is Worth Knowing
James Broadaway moved his family to Capetown, South Africa in early 2022 to begin investigating a Campus Outreach expansion opportunity. He spent time learning about the city, connecting with members of the local church, and walking in the Truth that God had already gone before him!
Within the first month, James met Siyabonga on the main steps of Sarah Baartman Hall at the University of Cape Town. He asked the young man about his academic interests, followed by deeper questions about his hopes and dreams. When the conversation ended, Siyabonga said, “I’ve never had a conversation like this!” James shared that he worked with an organization hoping to help develop student leadership on the campus. He explained his belief that the best leaders are spiritual leaders and asked Siyabonga if he had ever read the Bible. “I really hoped that when I came to university, someone would ask me to read the Bible or go to church,“ was the reply.
James suggested that they plan to start reading a chapter of Mark each week together. Because Siyabonga had so many questions, they only got through a few verses each time they met. It was evident that God was working in Siyabonga as his desire for the word of God grew, and he seemed to have more insight into the scriptures. However, in the summer, he was adamant that he was still investigating Christianity. As August came to an end, James asked Siyabonga where he was in his faith in God. He responded, “Yeah, man, I’m a Christian.” But has there been a change in Siyabonga? He told James, "When I first started reading the Bible, it was because I hoped to get blessings from God. Now I want to read it because He is worth knowing."
